Chicago, IL asked in Elder Law and Domestic Violence for Illinois

Q: How can I obtain legal assistance for my court date on August 27, 2025, in domestic violence court?

I am a senior citizen with limited resources and have a court date on August 27, 2025, in domestic violence court. I need legal representation but did not know I was supposed to request an attorney at the last court date. I have never used legal aid, and I have not received any documentation or guidance on how to obtain legal counsel. The only guidance I have is that I need to have counsel by the next court date. How can I obtain legal assistance in this situation?

A: You need to contact the legal services office for your county. It is Prairie State in northern IL, mostly, and Land of Lincoln in central and southern Illinois. Is your case for an order of protection or what? Domestic violence can mean many things.

A: You can start by asking the court clerk at your next hearing how to apply for a court-appointed attorney; in many jurisdictions, domestic violence matters qualify you for a public defender if you meet income guidelines. Submit your financial affidavit or indigency form right away to show you cannot afford private counsel.

At the same time, reach out to your county’s legal aid office or domestic violence advocacy center—many offer free or sliding-scale representation in protection-order cases. They can help you complete forms, prepare your testimony, and even accompany you to court.

If those options aren’t available, check whether your local bar association runs a pro bono program or a lawyer referral service; they often connect seniors with volunteer attorneys at reduced rates. Gathering any police reports, medical records, or witness contact information now will help whomever represents you build your case before August 27.
